Do we notarise overseas education documents?

Verifying Overseas Education Documents

As a public notary in Australia, we DO NOT and CANNOT verify education documents that have been issued by educational institutions in other countries.

If your education documents were not been issued by an educational institution in Australia, you must approach a public notary in the same country as that institution that issued your documents. Only a public notary in that country can notarise your education documents issued by educational institutions in that same country.

Verifying Australian Education Documents

Notary PublicAs a leading provider of public notary services in Sydney, we’re regularly asked to notarise documents issued by educational institutions (ie, qualifications, degrees, certificates, transcripts, reports and other educational documents). Many clients must be able to prove that they are properly qualified or have the educational prerequisite for employment or further studies overseas.

Generally, we can assist clients who have Australian education documents that need to be sent to other countries. Our public notary services include:

  • Verifying their education documents with the educational institution* that issued those documents;
  • Notarising the original or certified copies of those education documents;
  • Authenticating the notarised education documents through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the relevant foreign office of the intended destination country; or
  • Applying for an apostille from DFAT.

If the education documents have been issued by a public university and signed by an authorised public officer of that university, it may be possible to have those education documents authenticated by DFAT or stamped with an apostille without requiring notarisation. However, if the educational institution is not a public university, then those education documents must be notarised by a public notary.

How do we notarise educational documents?

Notarising educational documents is a 2-step process involving verification with the educational institution and followed by notarisation.

Verification generally involves us sending a copy of the education documents to the educational institution with a request that they confirm that the documents appear to be documents issued by them and that the information contained in those documents is true and correct.

More recently, we have also been above to verify documents issued electronically and available through My eQuals.

We commonly assist people with:

  • Verifying and notarising school reports from public and private primary and secondary schools
  • Verifying and notarising certificates and transcripts from public and private colleges and schools
  • Verifying and notarising degrees and transcripts from public and private universities, and
  • Verifying and notarising professional qualifications and accreditations from professional bodies and associations.

*Importantly, our verification process only applies to educational institutions in Australia and not to educational institutions in other countries.

What is My eQuals?

From the My eQuals website:

“My eQuals is the official tertiary credentials digital platform for the higher education sector, students and verifiers. It is a pan-pacific solution providing easy, secure access to certified, official qualification records for Australian and New Zealand universities and their learners.”

In our experience, the fastest and easiest way to verify and notarise educational documents from Australian universities is to obtain them as electronic documents from My eQuals shared with our public notary directly through the university or My eQuals portal. Check your university’s participation and arrangement with Mr eQuals.
